What solutions will future-proof the city’s infrastructure?
The design of large cities, like Rotterdam, is mostly defined by infrastructure. For example, the Maastunnel, the Erasmus bridge and the metro network are iconic technical elements in Rotterdam. For designing a new infsratutcture various aspects need to be taken into account. Is is a close balance between dominant functionalism and the human scale. Striving for beauty making large gestures that reflect the image of the city. And on the other hand striving for functionality and technical perfection. How can we bring these various aspects together into a future-proof and multifunctional infrastructure that enhances the quality of city life?
When will this hackathon take place?
28th and 29th January 2020 at GEVEL2020 in Ahoy Rotterdam.
At what exact times?
Tuesday 28 January from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Wednesday 29 January from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Where will this hackathon take place?
The hackathon takes place at the Gevelbeurs 2020. The Gevelbeurs is held at Ahoy, Rotterdam.
Why does this hackathon take two days?
The municipality of Rotterdam submitted a significant challenge: Explore the possibility of a new design approach to create future proof infrastructure. We will address questions such as; What can we learn from nature when it comes to designing a metro viaduct? how do we translate the provided ecosystems services to parameters? What does a future proof metro infrastructure looks like? Due to the scale and the complexity of these questions we have been given 2 days to hack this challenge and come up with dazzling solutions.
Why should I join?
– Unprecedented opportunity: working in a multidisciplinary team of students and start-ups towards a solution for society’s main challenges
– Business opportunity: as a start-up this is your chance to pitch your concept to a leading client
– Instructive: You will be trained to apply design thinking based on Life’s Principles (Biomimicry) to complicated challenges
– Inspiring: Free access to an interesting seminar of event.
In short: an inspiring experience!
What will be organised?
There are hotel rooms available at the Stayokay Hotel in the cube houses. Please note that these are shared rooms. If you prefer a private room, we suggest you book your own room. We will take care of the necessary food and beverages.
Do I have to participate both days?
It is preferable if you could join our team for 2 days. One day participation is discussible.
Is there some sort of remuneration for students?
Are you a student and can you show us your student card? Then a remuneration of 135 euro will be available for participating in the two-day hackathon.

Which solutions do you design for a future proof infrastructure in Rotterdam?

What solutions will future-proof the city’s infrastructure?
The design of large cities, such as Rotterdam, are mostly defined by their infrastructure. For example, the Maastunnel, the Erasmus bridge and the metro network are iconic technical constructions in Rotterdam.
Various aspects are taken into account while designing new infrastructure. Always looking for the balance between dominant functionalism and a desire for the human scale. Wanting to implement beauty, image and large movements, while taking into account knowledge of structure and construction.
How can we bring these various aspects together into a future-proof and multifunctional infrastructure that is integrated with the city? And can we translate ecosystem services to natural parameters what we can use to create that sweeping design?
These are the underlying issues that we are going to address during this two-day hackathon. To find solutions, we will be examining the database of nature, which has been filled for over 3.8 billion years with precious knowledge to solve these types of challenges. Together we will design a future proof metro viaduct that will inspire the municipality of Rotterdam.
In order to arrive at both groundbreaking and sustainable solutions, we focus on the knowledge of nature in the design process. Nature is full of ingenious design. In 3.8 billion years the animals and plants have been perfectly adapted to their circumstances. Did you know, for example, that the wing of an owl is designed so that it can fly silently?
